100% DISCHARGE RATE

A 12v lithium leisure battery can discharge 100% using all its stored energy. Whereas if you discharge conventional deep cycle lead acid batteries below 50% it causes permanent cell damage, resulting in reduced cycle capacity.

When choosing a 12v lithium leisure battery for your application whether that be a motorhome, boat, caravan, or campervan you should carry out some market research on the brands available. There are many new lithium batteries flooding into the UK market and with enticingly cheap price tags. It is hard even for us, sometimes, to tell the difference of which are quality products and what are cheaply manufactured products with no certification. Many of the Chinese imports are a give away with their wacky names and branding.  

BEWARE OF LOW COST IMPORTED BATTERIES

Be wary of low-cost imported batteries. Although they may seem appealing with their lower prices, they often suffer from poor quality components, manufacturing defects, quality issues and lack of official certification to be sold and used in the UK & EU Markets. These batteries and the cells that make up the battery rarely undergo any form of safety testing.  Its important to note that if you suffer any malfunction with imported goods sold via marketplaces or the internet which results in a claim with your insurance company, you will find that you are not covered unless the product carries the appropriate certifications to be sold in the UK/EU.

LITHIUM BATTERY CERTIFICATION

Many ‘off-the-shelf’ imported lithium batteries on the market lack the official certifications needed for legal sale and use in the UK and EU. In some countries, there are no strict manufacturing regulations, so companies often skip costly safety testing. At Lithium Pro, all our products undergo rigorous testing to meet the required certifications, including E-MARKING ECE R10, UKCA, CE, ROHS, RED and UN38.3

Motorhome and campervan manufacturers must follow strict safety and quality standards, only using E-marked products approved by governments or industry experts. In contrast, aftermarket van builders and converters are less regulated and can use uncertified components. However, they are responsible for ensuring the safety and quality of their work.

When purchasing batteries, always ask for certification to ensure you’re getting a product that meets the safety standards for your market.

LITHIUM BATTERY BUILD QUALITY

Low-cost budget lithium batteries often cut corners by using cheaper components or omit safety altogether in an effort to reduce costs.

For example, flimsy cotton straps may replace sturdy carry handles, and essential installation features like a base rail for securing the battery in vehicles may be missing. Internal safety features such as battery isolation, reverse polarity, short circuit and even over current protection are frequently not found on cheaper budget imports.
Even externally, quality differences are visible—poorly applied labels, signs of rough assembly, with overspill when sealing lids with glue rather than precision fittings all indicate subpar construction.

SERVICEABLE BATTERY CASES

At LithiumPro, all of our batteries are built with screw-top cases, giving easy access for servicing or component replacement whenever required. Our design allows us to fully honour our comprehensive 5-year warranty while ensuring superior quality, safety, and long-term reliability. In contrast, many other lithium brands use permanently glued shut cases, meaning they cannot be accessed for repaired without physically breaking the case. Which also raises the Quality Control question as to how their products are QC checked. Our sustainable approach supports full quality control audits, servicing, maintainability, and peace of mind for our customers.

BATTERY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

A lithium Battery Management System (BMS) is an essential safety system responsible for protecting, monitoring and optimising the battery. A well-engineered BMS plays a critical role in both safety and long-term battery life, but the quality of the hardware and sophistication of the control logic can vary significantly between manufacturers.

The BMS continuously monitors the battery and controls the vital safety protections built into its operating logic. These can include protection against overcharging, over-discharging, high and low temperatures, excessive charge or discharge current, short circuits and incorrect polarity conditions. It can also manage precision balancing of the individual cells within the battery pack, helping maintain consistent cell voltages and maximise usable capacity.

When these parameters are accurately monitored and controlled, the battery can operate safely and efficiently while reducing electrical stress and premature cell degradation. A high-quality BMS also helps reduce the risk of serious faults developing into potentially damaging conditions.

For demanding applications such as Motorhomes, Campervans, Caravans and Boats, where batteries are subjected to high currents, vibration and widely varying temperatures, BMS quality is particularly important. Choosing a high-performance lithium battery with a sophisticated, well-engineered BMS provides greater protection, longer service life, improved reliability and greater peace of mind.

Budget BMS vs LithiumPro SMARTIQ BMS

The image on the left illustrates a typical low-cost, hand-assembled BMS found inside some budget lithium batteries imported into the UK. It highlights a number of construction methods commonly associated with batteries manufactured primarily to meet a low price point rather than to provide long-term reliability.

The Battery Management System (BMS) is one of the most important safety components inside a lithium battery. Its primary role is to monitor and protect the lithium cells, manage high charge and discharge currents, and intervene when operating conditions move outside safe limits.

In this example, high-current connections rely on relatively small-gauge cables and hand-soldered joints rather than substantial conductors, secure mechanical terminals and correctly sized cable lugs. Poorly supported connections such as these are particularly concerning in motorhomes, campervans, caravans and boats, where continuous vibration, movement and high electrical loads place additional demands on every connection inside the battery.

The limited cable cross-section, exposed conductors and lack of substantial mechanical support or insulation all point towards a cost-led approach to construction. A basic BMS of this type may also provide only rudimentary protection and balancing compared with more sophisticated systems.

Many low-cost batteries are permanently sealed, making the internal construction impossible for the customer to inspect and preventing practical servicing, maintenance or component replacement later in the battery’s life.

 

The LithiumPro Difference

In stark contrast, the image on the right shows the construction of a LithiumPro SMARTIQ BMS.

Our BMS uses a robust twin-tier design engineered specifically for demanding leisure, marine and off-grid applications, incorporating 11 automatic-reset safety protections to continuously monitor and protect the battery.

High-current conductors are substantially larger in cross-section and are connected using secure bolted terminals and correctly sized cable lugs. Connections and components are mechanically supported to withstand the vibration experienced in motorhomes, campervans and marine installations.

LithiumPro also incorporates additional protection features as standard, including Pre-Charge Protection, which helps control the powerful inrush currents created when connecting large inverters, motor movers and other high-capacitance equipment. This reduces huge electrical stress on the BMS, terminals and associated equipment and contributes towards greater long-term reliability.

Powerful Active Cell Balancing continually works to maintain closely matched cell voltages, helping the battery utilise its available capacity efficiently throughout every charge and discharge cycle.

The difference isn’t simply what you can see on the outside of a lithium battery. It’s the engineering, protection and build quality inside that determines how safely and reliably it will perform for years to come.

WHAT CELLS ARE IN YOUR LITHIUM BATTERY

Many importers are still selling the older style LiFePO4 cylindrical celled batteries.  The vast majority are not traceable with not identification on them to acsertain the factories that produced them. Consequentially, you have no idea when the cells were manufactured or what Grade cells are being used inside the battery pack, let alone if they were ever certified to any form of safety standard post production. 
All LithiumPro batteries use brand new cells produced by the top-tier manufacturers and are certified to stringent, UL standards, UL1973, UL1642 ensuring they meet both safety and performance criteria for use in vehicles as auxiliary power systems.

Cylindrical cells are much smaller in size and up to 80+ cells can be required to make a single 100AH battery. Four batches of 20 cells connected in series and then parallel to make up a 12.8v battery pack. This brings certain limitations in many aspects of design and battery longevity. Both monitoring and balancing 80 cells is a more complex task compared with more modern battery packs using only 4 Prismatic cells. Newer prismatic battery packs achieve superior battery performance for longer. The heat transfer of 80 cylindrical cells is far greater than just 4 prismatic cells. Also packaging of large numbers of cylindrical cells is not conducive to allow small compact designs either.  Cylindrical cells are heavier and more bulkier in design.  So make sure you understand what cells are in your batteries and if they have been UL certified for use in your application. Otherwise your insurers may refuse to cover you or payout in any claim.

WHY CELL QUALITY MATTERS

When buying a lithium (LiFePO4) leisure battery in the UK — whether for your caravan, motorhome, boat, or off-grid solar setup — the quality of the individual cells inside is one of the most important factors. Not all lithium cells are the same, and using lower-grade ones can lead to shorter battery life, reduced performance, and even safety issues.

  • Compare cell endurance – Some cells in lithium batteries are capable of lasting 2000 cycles. LithiumPro Energy only use the very highest quality cells which can last up to 8000 cycles – thats 4X the cell lifespan so make sure you compare apples with apples.

Many budget batteries quietly use Grade B or recycled cells to hit a low price point. They might work fine for the first year or two, but you’ll notice the capacity dropping quickly, and the battery may fail long before the warranty suggests.

LITHIUM BATTERY SAFETY & QUALITY CONTROL

As of 2023, China dominates the global lithium production market, controlling approximately 80% of the supply. Lithium batteries worldwide utilise the same chemistry to achieve remarkable advancements in energy density and battery performance. However, it is crucial to recognise that the design, production, testing, and quality control processes can significantly vary among manufacturers.

Laser welding provides a permanent, robust bond that eliminates the risk of loosening over time, a common issue with bolted connections.
